Peyronie’s disease is a condition in which fibrous scar tissue (plaques) develop inside the penis, in the tough sheath called the tunica albuginea. As this scar tissue does not stretch normally during an erection, it can lead to the penis bending or curving when erect, as well as other changes.
Recognising the symptoms
The hallmark sign is a noticeable bend or curvature of the erect penis, often accompanied by hard lumps under the skin, pain (with or without erection), and sometimes shortening or narrowing of the shaft. Some men may also experience erectile dysfunction or distress about appearance and sexual function.
What causes Peyronie’s disease?
The exact cause of Peyronie’s disease remains unclear. However, it is thought to result from repeated minor injury or trauma to the penis (often during sex) in combination with abnormal wound-healing in susceptible individuals. Additional risk factors include age (most common in men between 40–70), certain connective tissue disorders, diabetes and a family history of similar conditions.
When to seek specialist care
If you notice new lumps on the penis shaft, a sudden or increasing bend, painful erections, or difficulty in sexual activity, it’s wise to consult a specialist urologist. Early intervention increases the chance of stabilising the condition and improving outcomes.
Treatment and outlook
Treatment depends on how advanced the condition is, how much it affects sexual function, and if the curvature/pain is worsening. Conservative options (watchful waiting if symptoms are mild), intralesional injections (e.g., collagenase) and traction therapy are commonly used in the early phase. For more severe or stable cases many months after onset, surgery may be considered to straighten the penis or restore function.
